12 Swoon-Worthy Time Travel Romances

Updated: Apr 30, 2019

Time travel romance might just combine the best of everything. A combination of modern and historical, a hint of magic, and some amazing characters. I read a lot of time travel romance - here are just a few of my favourites!

Outlander

Might as well just get it out of the way - Outlander (or Cross Stitch) pretty much defined the genre of time travel romance. And now we all have the TV show to keep us busy!

The Rose Garden

I love all of Susanna Kearsley's books, but this might just be my favourite. It's a gorgeous standalone timeslip romance, where the past and the present increasingly blend together, all in the setting of a rose-draped country house.

Intertwine

Time travel regency? Basically my two favourite genres combined. This first book in the House of Oak series is absolutely magical - and the series just keeps on getting better! Read it for swoon-worthy heroes, high-paced action, and some laugh-out-loud moments.

The Pirate Queen

This Irish series isn't quite a time travel series in the strictest sense, but it definitely jumps between past and present. With a tangle of romantic interests and detailed descriptions of all the Irish settings, this series is a fun read.

Now and Then

I don't read a lot of Western romance, but I flew through this series! Each book is a standalone time travel romance set in the west of Canada during the nineteenth century. Each book is romantic and lovely, with memorable characters and exciting plots.

Time of the Warrior

Maybe it's cheating to include my own book... but I basically wrote what I wanted to read! An ambitious heroine with a career in time travel, a hero who's tough but full of sercrets - what's not to love?

The Thornless Rose

Elizabethan time travel is a rare genre, but I can't think why, with this book as an example! This is deeply romantic and absolutely packed with adventure - plus some guest appearances by Queen Elizabeth I herself!

Dreamspell

I love Tamara Leigh's medieval romances, and this one has such a fascinating premise - time travel as part of a sleep experiment. This is a beautiful, inspirational read, with all kinds of rich historical details.

Tangled in Time

Part time travel and part ghost story, this romantic tale brings a Celtic warrior to the present day - and to a very modern woman, who must fight to keep him.

Once Upon A Time Travel

Something completely different - chick lit with a time travel twist! This is a fun, fast-paced book with lots of witty dialogue, and great chemistry between the two leads.

A Time to Change

Be warned - this made me cry. A beautiful story of a house that helps those who need it most, this is a wonderful exploration of heartbreak and healing.

Love Beyond Time

This has become a huge hit, spawning dozens (hundreds?) of similar highlander time-travel romances. Skip the imitations and try this instead! Plus, if you like it, the series is absolutely huge and will keep you busy for quite a while.

BONUS: The Psychology of Time Travel

This isn't a romance book, per se, but it's a fascinating study of time travel, with a very feminist slant and all sorts of interesting ideas. Highly recommended!
